Lowville Girls Get Ready, Sans Track

If you're standing outside Lowville Academy, you can see the girls track and field team running laps around the building. Or, you might find them practicing in the hallways of the school. Or measuring out distances on a near-by street, so that they can time themselves. What you won't see: the track team on a track. They don't have one. So no home meets, and a lot of improvising, when it comes to practice. "We make do with what we do have," allows coach Bill Marks. "We're at a huge disadvantage for some events." By Marks' reckoning, the long jump and middle distance races are the competitions where Lowville has the least disadvantage. And the team has shown remarkable strength in the past; former Lowville star Chelsea Berry was a league all-star five times, won 102 titles, 17 league titles and five state titles. It's a matter of sher toughness, sometimes. "We just have to adapt to it," says Jenelle Vargulick. "The hardest part is we get a lot of shin splints and knee problems."
said on Thursday, Apr 30 at 2:19 PM I'm a former track runner and i think it would help our team alot if our school got a track it would prevent alot of injuries and an ability to run fast without getting shins splints. It would help out the weight room sitiuation too because we hog up all of the machines Inappropriate? Alert Us!
