The Watertown Red & Black lost their starting center early Saturday morning.

State police say David Towles, 21, was driving on Fuller Road in the Town of Adams around 4 a.m. when his car veered off the road and hit a tree.

Police say Towles was the only person in the car.

Towles, an outstanding high school athlete at South Jefferson and a two year player for the Red & Black, started on this year's championship team.

As players gathered to mourn at head coach George Ashcraft's home Saturday, Ashcraft recalled Towles as a player not deterred by chronic knee problems.

"No matter how much pain he was in, he'd get right back up for the next play," Ashcraft said.

"He would do whatever it took to make himself better."

Towles was named to the starting Eastern Football League All-Star team this year.

Police are still investigating what caused the accident.

NewzJunky reported Saturday morning that the accident was a 'rollover.' (NewzJunky also has several photos of the accident and more details.)
