The McDonald's-7 News Athletes of The Week this week are two leaders of the Carthage Central swim team.

Emily Sauter won the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events at the Frontier League championship, then turned around and won the 50 yard freestyle at the Section 3 class B meet.

All that from a swimmer who wasn't happy with her own performance for much of the year.

As it turns out, Sauter said, her coach had a plan, and that plan began to pay off in the championships.

"I'm very happy about how I performed over the weekend and how the team performed over the weekend," Sauter told 7 News.

Teammate Maggie Pogue won the 200 yard freestyle and 100 yard butterfly at the Frontier League championships and the 100 yard butterfly at the section 3 meet.

Both swimmers contributed to their team's win at the Frontier League championship.

"They have helped improve our program," says coach Nancy Mushtare. "They're setting a good example for the other girls."
