Sports Saturday: Carthage, IHC Win In Playoffs


The Carthage Comets went 90 yards with no timeouts left and little time on the clock Saturday night, as they beat the Indian River Warriors 21-20 and claimed the Section 3 Class A football championship.

Josh Yelvington of Carthage scored on a two point conversion with 21 seconds left to give Carthage the win, after the Comets had trailed 20-13 with two minutes on the clock.

Quarterback Bailey Wilkinson, who was Carthage's most valuable player in the post game ceremony, executed the 14 play drive. The game was played at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.

The Comet victory capped a  day of playoffs involving north country teams:

The superb season of the Beaver River Beavers girls soccer team ended Saturday afternoon.

The team, which won a first ever Section 3 Class C championship, lost 2-0 to Lansing in state Class C quarterfinal playoffs. The game was played at Norwich high school.

Also Saturday...

Sandy Creek's winning football season came to an end, as the team lost 43-14 against Herkimer for the Section 3 Class D football championship.

IHC beat Margaretville 1-0 Saturday afternoon in boys' Class D soccer quarterfinals.

IHC is the Section 3 Class D champion; Margaretville the Section 4 Class D champion.

Jake Fusilli scored the winning goal in the first half.

IHC now advances to play next weekend at Middletown high school, at 12:30 pm Saturday against Jasper-Troupsburg.
