Gil Pearsall, the man behind the mountain, is getting the prestigious Israel A. Shapiro Award for Citizenship.

The announcement was made Wednesday morning.

Pearsall spearheaded the North Country Honors the Mountain memorial project, which built the Monument to the 10th Mountain Division at Watertown's Thompson Park.

He's involved in a number of other community organizations.

Pearsall was nominated by retired 10th Mountain Division Colonel Michael Plummer for his dedication to the community.

"I looked at his contribution to the community, visibly, and other contributions that people have made, and thought, you know, he needs to be recognized for this." said Plummer.

"I truly think that I'm representative of many of the other military retirees who've all stayed here in the area  and contributed back to their community," said Pearsall.

Pearsall will receive the honor at the Greater Watertown North Country Chamber of Commerce dinner February 2 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Watertown.
