How Did The 315 Area Code Transition Go?

Posted: Updated:

Westelcom is a phone company that provides voice and data services to municipalities, hospitals, and businesses throughout the north country.

For months, the company made sure its customers knew about dialing 315 before making a phone call.

"Some mass announcements, lots of emails going out and calling some individuals customers that have a larger quantity of voice services," said Ben Brannan, Westelcom networks operation manager.

Starting this past Saturday, anyone with a 315 area code had to start dialing the area code plus the phone number when calling out.

It's all because we're getting a new area code, 680, this March.

Brannan says, for the most part, the transition of dialing the area code was pretty smooth.

"We only had a couple of calls and it was actually customers that had certain features on their phone lines like call forwarding that didn't apply to feature sets right, but those were pretty easily fixable," he said.

And STAT Communications has spent the past few months reprogramming its alarms to make sure the company doesn't miss any emergency phone calls.

"Everybody's up and running and we're just going as normal," said Bruce Morgia, STATE Communications CEO.

For what it's worth, we contacted a number of different pizzerias, because who gets more phone calls then a pizzeria?

All of the ones we reached out to said their customers were not complaining about dialing the area code.
