Nine horses, including well-known show horses, were killed when a barn and an attached indoor riding ring were destroyed by fire in the town of Croghan Tuesday morning.
Lewis County fire officials say "an alert motorist" saw a fire on the horizon and called 911 to report it, but didn't know the exact location.
It turned out to be at a barn owned by owned by the Marolf family at 4849 Beech Ridge Road.
The barn was fully consumed by the time firefighters from Castorland, who were first on the scene, arrived.
The building and its contents, including the animals inside, are a total loss.
Among well-known show horses killed were Lennox and Norman,who once won a national competition.
The cause has not been determined.
