5- & 7-Year Sentences For Couple Who Starved 5 Year Old

The couple that starved a 5 year old boy in St. Lawrence County was sentenced in county court Monday morning.

Thirty-three year old Anthony Gladle, the boy's father, was sentenced to five years in state prison.

Forty-five year old Shelly Shirley, who was Gladle's girlfriend at the time, was sentenced to seven years.

Both pleaded guilty to second-degree assault charges in February.

Shirley also pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted murder.

“I know even talking to the caseworkers for the department of social services, it was a very emotionally taxing case," said William Galvin, Shirley's attorney.

Shirley and Gladle were ordered to each pay $1,375 in fines and fees.

The two withheld food from the boy because Shirley, who was a licensed practical nurse, thought he was too heavy.

He weighed 41 pounds in August 2013 and was down to 21 pounds when Child Protective Services removed him from their home in January 2016.

Assistant Chief District Attorney Keith Massey Jr. read the mother's victim impact statement, outlining the crime's more horrific details.

“For the child victim who has already been traumatized once, we certainly don't want to traumatize the victim a second time,” said Massey.

Judge Derek Champagne repeated some of those details during sentencing.
