Noonan Guilty On All CountsPosted: Updated:
A Jefferson County Court jury has found Gregory Noonan guilty on all counts, including second-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend, Barbara Getman, in August 2016.
He showed no reaction to the verdict.
Noonan will be sentenced June 27.
The jury started deliberating shortly after noon Monday. Their verdict came in at around 3:45 p.m.
Barbara Getman's family members cried and hugged one another after the verdict.
"I'm trying to hold back the emotion, but the quakiness in my voice says it all. We just wanted answers and we finally got them," said David Curry, Barbara Getman's brother
Noonan was found guilty on six counts including second-degree murder, assault, and criminal contempt.
During the trial, there was testimony that Getman and Noonan had argued the day she died and that she died of a liver injury. The prosecution says while you can never predict the jury's outcome they felt confident in their case.
"We believed that this was murder from the get go. Our office and law enforcement were solid on that and it's nice to see that the jury agrees with us," said Jefferson County Chief Asst. District Attorney Patricia Dziuba.
After almost a year after since Getman's death, her brother says justice was finally served.
But as far as getting closure...
"It does, but it just, it's obviously not going to bring my loved one back and she was a sister, a mother, a daughter," he said.
In it's closing argument, the defense argued it wasn't clear how or when Barbara Getman was injured.
Noonan inflicted the blunt force trauma that injured her liver and caused her to bleed to death internally. He told police in his recorded statements that she had a seizure while they were having sex.
The two shared a bedroom at 217 South Pleasant Street in Watertown.
The defense also said even though Noonan and Getman had their problems, they were in love.
Prosecutors told the jury that Getman was going to leave Noonan, which they said was enough of a motive to kill her.
They said he was the last person with her two hours before she died and that he was the one who caused the blunt force trauma to her liver.
