Jefferson County Asks State For More Flooding Help

Posted: Updated:

As Chaumont's fire chief continues to ask for volunteers to help fill sandbags, Jefferson County is asking for more help from the state.

Flooding continues to be a problem for many along the Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River shores.

"We've asked for an extension on the current National Guard that were supposed to be there until Friday," county Legislature chair Scott Gray said. "We've asked to have their time extended. We've asked to double up on their numbers. We've asked for more sand, we've asked for more sandbags. We've asked for another machine, if possible."

Communities along the shoreline like Chaumont are filling thousands of sandbags to keep back high water levels.

Chaumont Fire Chief Fred Jackson says volunteers are needed every evening this week to help fill bags.

The state is also helping flooding victims in St. Lawrence. A Mobile Command Center is in Ogdensburg Wednesday.

State Financial Services officials will be at the Dobisky Center until 8 p.m.
