Fire Leaves Hammond Family Homeless

Posted: Updated:

A Hammond family is without a home after a fire Wednesday evening.

No one was inside when the fire started at 307 Lake Street.

Fire officials say it started in the kitchen.

Officials say the situation could have been a lot worse, but the Hammond Fire Department is across the street and firefighters were on the scene in minutes.

"When we first arrived on scene there was heavy smoke and about an eight-foot flame coming out of the rear window of the house -- the kitchen window," Hammond First Assistant Fire Chief Lenny Bickelhaupt said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The family of four is being assisted by the American Red Cross.
