Jailing 'Operation Gravy Train' Suspects Could Cost County $100K

Posted: Updated:

They're described as "violent drug dealers" and they're behind bars, but at what cost?

We're talking about last week's massive drug bust, called "Operation Gravy Train."

More than 100 suspects were rounded up.

To house them in jail will be expensive - a cost that will fall on the St. Lawrence County taxpayer.

Of the more than 100 suspects, around 66 are locked up in Canton.

To make room for them, 38 other inmates had to be moved to other county jails, which is a practice called outboarding.

To outboard an inmate, St. Lawrence County will pay between $90 and $100 a day to the host jail.

As the legal process starts, this scenario could play out for the next 30 days and the tab could be $100,000.

“There's a cost to any public safety. You just have to know you're doing the right thing; that you are doing what you can do to make your community safer. And everything comes with a cost,” said St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin Wells. “The state pays no money towards county jails. County jail costs are mandates that the county has. It's their burden to bear.”

The process of setting bail for the 66 In jail, which could prompt them to get released, is not expected to start until the middle of this month.

Last week, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced the indictment of 106 people charged with conspiring in two major drug distribution networks that transported heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine to St. Lawrence County.
