Defense Secretary: 'We're Not Winning In Afghanistan'
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis says when it comes to the war in Afghanistan, America is not winning.
And the New York Times reports President Trump has given Mattis the authority to determine how many more troops he needs.
Mattis is believed to favor sending several thousand more American troops to strengthen the effort to advise Afghan forces as they push back against gains made by the Taliban, the Islamic State and other militant groups.
But officials said he had not yet decided how many more forces to send to Afghanistan, or when to deploy them.
"We're not winning in Afghanistan right now and we will correct this as soon as possible," said Mattis.
Mattis says he'll have the new strategy to share with lawmakers by mid-July to turn around the war.
