SUV Strikes Girl, Overturns On Route 283

A young girl was injured Friday afternoon when she apparently darted out into traffic and was struck by an SUV, state police said.

The accident happened on Route 283, which is also known as outer Pearl Street, between Lafave and Patterson roads. It's in the Town of LeRay, not far from the Watertown city limits.

Injured was Angel M. Howard, 13, of Route 283,. State police said Howard ran into the roadway and was struck by an SUV driven by Michael B. Blair, 37, of Gouverneur.

A witness, who is a Fort Drum soldier, told 7 News reporter Michael Loffredo that he rushed to the injured girl's side. He said she had a pulse and was semi-conscious.Police said Howard was in serious condition Friday night, after being airlifted to SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse.

 The SUV swerved off the road and overturned. The people inside the vehicle - Blair and two passengers - were unhurt.

 A state police investigator said the girl was speaking was she was being taken away.

Police said late Friday that their investigation is continuing.
