More People Are Using Watertown Airport In 2017Posted: Updated:
Another American Airlines flight lands at Watertown International Airport. And in 2017, more passengers are coming and going from here.
"Watertown's very convenient for us. It's close to (our) cottage. We come up here and stay a little bit," said Janet Elliott, flying to Fort Myers.
According to the latest passenger numbers, more than 15,000 travelers have flown in and out of Watertown International Airport from January through May this year.
That's 2,000 more than at the same point last year.
This comes as American Airlines prepares to bring back a 50-passenger regional jet for its twice-a-day flights, replacing the 37-seater.
"The start of the jet service on July 5 comes at perfect timing in our peak season months of July and August," said Grant Sussey, Watertown International Airport manager.
"Our strong start this year shows that there's a demand for that here. If you look around this facility, it's an A-1 facility," said Phil Reed, Jefferson County legislator.
Fliers say they hope the return of the larger plane will make it easier to come back to Watertown.
"We were delayed a little bit because they were trying to get people to give up seats. They said we have too many people for this small plane," said Tom Waild, flying from Virginia Beach.
And starting on August 22, there will be an earlier flight out of Watertown for business travelers.
It'll depart at 6:10 a.m., replacing the 8:05 a.m. flight.
