Don Cole Dies; Owned Bonnie Castle in Alexandria Bay

Posted: Updated:

A central New York businessman who had extensive ties to the north country died Friday.

Donald E. Cole Sr., was 86.

Cole was best known as the owner of the "Cole Muffler" chain of automotive repair shops, and had extensive business holdings in the Syracuse area and elsewhere. But he was best known in northern New York as the former owner of Bonnie Castle Yacht Basin.

Cole's obituary Friday noted:

Don also enjoyed nice cars and fast boats. His Mahogany Chris Crafts were typically the fastest on the Seneca River. Later he would trade in the fast boats for ever-bigger cruisers. This brought him up to Alexandria Bay. He loved "The Bay" area so much that he bought Bonnie Castle Yacht Basin and developed it into a major resort.

Cole lived in Baldwinsville. Funeral arrangements are with Falardeau Funeral Home of Baldwinsville.
