Rock-Hunting Facebook Groups Spread Around North CountryPosted: Updated:
It's simple. You paint a rock. Then you hide the rock. Then children and seemingly everyone in Ogdensburg goes looking for your rock and those hidden by hundreds of others.
The goal is simple: find the painted rocks.
But there's more going on here than just a rock hard version of hide and seek.
"It's just a good way to feel good and make someone feel good. And it's a hunt and you're outside and you just get to be together,” said Cheryl Seymour, founder Ogdensburg Rocks.
And the fun doesn't stop once you've found a rock. You can just turn it over and on the back there is a message telling you to post it to the Ogdensburg Rocks Facebook page. It already has thousands of followers.
“I cry. Sometimes I look at the posts where people are so happy they are outside. And it goes back to the old times when people were outside talking to each other and just interacting with the family and getting to see the city,” said Seymour.
Even some Ogdensburg businesses are getting in on the excitement.
At one you can get a free candy bar if you find their rock. Restaurants have deals as well.
But kids know best what the bottom line is with all this rock business.
“I like to hide them because if someone finds them, they can be happy,” said Chloe Frank, age 6, Ogdensburg.
There is now a Lisbon Rocks Facebook page and one for Heuvelton Rocks and another for Massena Rocks. So join in. Fun is just a stone's throw away.
