The body of a 64 year old woman was recovered from Lake Ontario Sunday evening, after she was caught by the currents while swimming in a pond that spills into the lake.

Yvonne Kraus of Central Square "was overcome" by the waters, according to a statement from the Jefferson County Sheriff's office, who said the incident happened at 2:46 PM Sunday.

Kraus was one of several family members "struggling in the water trying to swim against the strong channel current," according to the statement.

It happened at Floodwood Pond at the Lakeview Marsh Wildlife Management Area in Ellisburg, at the far southern end of Jefferson County The pond flows into Lake Ontario.

On scene, officials told 7 News reporter Chris Spiker a family was out kayaking and swimming. When some children had trouble in the water, adults went in after them - and Kraus did not return.

A large search and rescue effort was mounted Sunday evening - divers were in the water. There were rescue boats on the water, and a helicopter circling overhead, looking for signs of the woman.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's office, state police, Department of Environmental Conservation rangers, and fire departments from Belleville, Ellisburg, Sandy Creek, Henderson and South Jefferson were all on hand.

Sandy Creek and Henedrson brought boats to the scene, and the Belleville fire department supplied a jet ski.

A command post was set up on North Landing Road in the Town of Ellisburg.
