An "alert neighbor" is being credited with helping save a family and their pets from a house fire in Lowville Monday night.
Fire officials say the neighbor called 911 around 10:30 p.m. after seeing fire near the front door of a home owned by Troy and Melissa Clark at 7871 East State Street.
The family was able to safely retrieve their pets through a window.
Officials say the home was heavily damaged by fire despite firefighters' quick response. The home also suffered heavy smoke and water damage.
The cause has not been determined.
