Watertown Man Faces Jail, Will Lose Citizenship

Posted: Updated:

A Watertown man was sentenced Tuesday to three months in prison and will lose his U.S. citizenship for lying about sexually abusing a 9 year old child.

Gurpreet Singh, 37, was sentenced in federal court in Syracuse to knowingly obtaining U.S. citizenship through unlawful naturalization.

Singh was convicted on the charge after a jury trial in January.

According to the U.S. Attorney's office - which prosecuted Singh - Singh repeatedly told US Citizenship and Immigration officials he had not committed any crimes for which was not arrested. In fact, Singh abused a 9 year old child while he was applying for citizenship, prosecutors said, and Signh was arrested the day after he became a citizen in April, 2012, on a charge of sexual abuse of a minor.

Singh also faces three years of parole, and has to register as a sex offender.
