OFA Blue Devils Hope To Return To State Title Game

Posted: Updated:

The story of the year on the high school football field in 2016 was the OFA Blue Devils.

Coach Matt Tessmer's team won seven straight games to make it to the state Class C championship game at the Carrier Dome, where they lost to Newark Valley 39-34.

The Blue Devils finished 10-3 and became the first-ever Section 10 team to make it to the state championship game on the gridiron.

Gone from that team are 13 seniors -- including three All-State players -- but Tessmer says the team has enough back to make another run in the states.

"So we have a lot of open spots, but we also had a lot of young guys last year who stepped up during the season," Tessmer said, "and now it's their turn to, you know, kinda take that leadership vacuum that we have with all of the seniors that have graduated and they need to step up."

"We lost some pretty important parts, some key role players, but honestly we got a lot of our core back," player Jackson Troiano said, "like a good lineman, some good running backs -- we'll be good."
