North Country School Districts Seek Substitute TeachersPosted: Updated:
Emily Guerra just moved from Pennsylvania to Carthage. She has a degree in education and is looking for work as a substitute teacher.
"I'm a Pennsylvania certified teacher, but unfortunately not a New York certified teacher yet. I have a few tests I have to take and then I'll be ready to go," she said.
Guerra is not the only one looking for that type of job. Almost 30 people attended the North Country Schools Job Fair at Jefferson-Lewis BOCES in Watertown.
Potential candidates met with representatives from Carthage School District, Indian River School District, and the Watertown City School District. Each of them are constantly looking for substitute teachers throughout the year.
"Everybody's really short on certified teaching staff, but that also trickles down to our substitute staff as well," said Jason Ring, Watertown City School District.
While you need a two year or four year degree to be a substitute teacher, there are some positions these school districts are looking for that just require a high school diploma.
"Teacher assistant, teacher aide, food service, so it's a little bit of everything," said Ring.
These school districts are constantly looking to fill substitute positions. Jefferson-Lewis BOCES plans on holding another job fair like this one in December.
