Fire Heavily Damages Boat On Wellesley Island

A 35-foot yacht named "Game Over" was heavily damaged by fire at a Wellesley Island marina Wednesday morning.

It happened around 10 a.m. at the Thousand Island Club marina.

Wellesley Island Fire Chief Randy Beach said the cruiser was fully engulfed  in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene -- both on land and by water.

"We were notified when we got on scene that there was approximately 1,000 gallons of gasoline on board, so we quickly extinguished the fire with foam and suffocated the fire," he said.

There were no injuries and no cause has been determined. However, officials say the fire might have been touched off by an electrical problem.

"We saw a tower of black smoke rising. We first thought it was a bit of a brush fire, but we realized it was way too severe for that," said Jonah Bonn, bystander.

No one was on the double-decker yacht at the time of the fire.

The flames were contained within the yacht and did not spread to any other nearby boats.

All owner Doug Horton can do is look back and watch. He told 7 News off camera he's sick to his stomach over the damage.

It's unclear if the yacht can be repaired.
