Firefighters Union Supports Non-Incumbent City Council CandidatesPosted: Updated:
The union that represents Watertown city firefighters is throwing its support behind everyone in the city council race who's not an incumbent.
In a news release Sunday night, union officials say current city council members Steve Jennings and Teresa Macaluso "are often in discordance with reality" when it comes to their dealings with the union in an ongoing contract dispute.
The union says it believes any of the three challengers -- Cliff Olney, Lisa Ruggiero, or Ryan Henry-Wilkinson -- have a better chance at fixing the tension between the union and the city than the incumbents.
"Their recent attacks against Local 191 have been both belligerent and personal, and serve only to distort fact and further their fictionalized version of history," the union's release said of the incumbents..
Firefighters have been working without a union contract for about three years.
The five candidates are vying for Jennings' and Macaluso's seats on the council. The field of five will be narrowed to four in primary elections Tuesday.
Those four will run for the two available seats in the November general election.
The union says it will make official endorsements after the primary.
