Fort Drum Soldiers Deploying To Afghanistan

Fort Drum soldiers will be deploying this week to Afghanistan.

The post announced that troops from the 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team will deploy in support of Operation Freedom Sentinel.

Officials would not disclose how many soldiers are going to Afghanistan for security reasons. They did say the troops will be advising and assisting the Afghan army.

"I can unequivocally state that 1-87 Soldiers are 'READY NOW' for their mission in Afghanistan.  The Summit Battalion possess the very best equipment, the best leaders, and the best trained Soldiers in our Army today," said 1st Infantry Brigade Combat Team Commander Colonel Shane Morgan in a news release.

Officials were unsure how long the deployment will last.

A deployment ceremony is scheduled for Friday morning at Fort Drum.
