The city of Watertown is hiring another police officer.
The city council unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday night to hire an new officer.
Police Chief Charles Donoghue is expecting a retirement soon and says the extra hire is necessary to keep staffing levels where they need to be.
That means the city will now send four people to the police academy for training.
"For us to have another academy, to be able to put in somebody else through -- if we were to wait until afterward to hire, it puts us behind the eight-ball for nearly a year."
Also at Tuesday night's meeting, council members voted 4-1 to locate a new splash pad at Thompson Park just to side of the now-defunct pool.
The cost is estimated at $120,000.
