The South Jefferson School District is getting ready to run for one of their own, who's battling breast cancer.

South Jeff High School girls basketball coach and teacher Michelle Whitley was diagnosed with with breast cancer back in June. The middle school is hosting a day of activities to raise money for her. It's called "Spartan Nation Support for Coach Whitley."

"With her being so influential to our community and our school, especially with females, I think it's important to bring awareness to it and show that a strong mind can lead to a strong physical recovery," said Jen Williams, middle school physical education teacher and basketball coach.

The event is Saturday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.

There are a variety of events, including a 3K run and walk, therapeutic water class for survivors, and volleyball.

Each event costs $5.

T-shirts are available by emailing jewilliams@spartanpride.org.
