Fire destroyed a home in the community of Herrings Monday, leaving two people homeless.

Volunteers were called to 35880 Route 3 shortly before noon.

Carthage, West Carthage, Fort Drum, Felts Mills, Black River and Rutland fire departments battled the flames.

"Considering what we faced when we got here, we were able to gain control pretty quick," Carthage Assistant Fire Chief Brian Draper said.

According to the man who lived there, he and his wife were upstairs when the blaze apparently started in the kitchen. He came downstairs and saw flames.

He said he wasn't able to get back upstairs due to heavy smoke so he yelled to his wife to jump from a second floor window.

He said five puppies and a cat died in the blaze.

Officials say no people were injured.

Firefighters said the blaze caused damage to the side of a neighboring home.

A portion of Route 3 was closed due to the fire but reopened late Monday afternoon.
