Morristown Residents Learn Pros & Cons Of Dissolving VillagePosted: Updated:
There are pros and cons to both the village and the town of Morristown if the village dissolved.
The Development Authority of the North Country (DANC) is studying the possibility of dissolving the village. DANC representatives held a public information meeting about it Tuesday night.
If the village dissolves, residents with a home valued at $100,000 would see a decrease of $945 in taxes.
Similar homeowners in the town would see a tax increase of $30.
The town would take over water and sewer services and the village would become a new fire district.
Some village residents say they're in favor of dissolving because it would make governing more efficient.
"It's saving all around, while distributing it around the town," Travis TenEyck said. "Overall, it should improve the overall tax rate here substantially and eliminate overhead that's not necessary and just make the town more efficient."
Other village residents say they are against dissolution and have doubts about the potential savings.
DANC plans to hold more public meetings about the issue.
