State police have identified the Amish man who died in a motor vehicle-buggy accident Wednesday.

Troopers say 26 year old Jacob Hershberger died when his buggy was struck on the Irish Settlement Road in the town of Oswegatchie by an SUV driven by 38 year old Alexis Gleeson of Ogdensburg.

Police say both vehicles were traveling south.

The accident happened shortly before 5 p.m. A one-mile stretch of the road was closed for about five hours.

Hershberger was pronounced dead at the scene by St. Lawrence County Coroner Kevin Crosby. Troopers say Crosby determined the victim died of a skull fracture caused by the accident.

Gleeson was not hurt.

Police say their investigation is continuing.

It was the second accident between a car and a buggy the Heuvelton Fire Department responded to in a one-hour span.

The earlier one on State Route 184 was not serious.
