Edna A. Rice, 100, formerly of Theresa, passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2017, at Samaritan Summit Village, Watertown.
Edna was born on Wellesley Island September 26, 1917, daughter of William H. and Hattie M. Sovey Gould. She attended Clayton schools. On October 12, 1940 she married Leland P. Rice in the parsonage of Natural Bridge Methodist Church with Rev. Albert Walker officiating. Leland died September 18, 1992.
Edna is survived by her daughter, Marjorie A. Barker, Adams; two sons and their wives, Gordon L. and Elizabeth, Powhatan, VA and Daniel W. and Michelle, Redwood; four grandchildren, three foster grandchildren, three great grandchildren, two step great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Along with her husband, Leland, Edna was predeceased by her five brothers, Charlie, Harry, Frederick, Floyd, and Gerald Gould, and her two sisters, Hazel Sheley and Gladys Eckert.
She was a self-employed hairdresser in Theresa for 25 years, living in Theresa from 1950 to 2001. She then lived in Evans Mills and Adams before moving into Summit. Edna was a very active member of Depauville Order of the Easter Star and served as its Matron on two separate occasions. At the age of 80, she learned to swim.
Graveside services in St. Lawrence Cemetery, town of Cape Vincent, will be held at a time and date to be announced in the spring of 2018. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are entrusted with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton.
