Saturday Sports: Clarkson Women Take Victory SLU

It was round two of the battle for bragging rights in the north country on the ice Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena in Canton, where the Lady Saints of St. Lawrence hosted the defending national champion, Clarkson's Lady Golden Knights. Clarkson won game 1 of the home and home series Thursday night at Cheel Arena.

St. Lawrence struck first as Amanda McClure dented the net: 1-0 Lady Saints. Clarkson answered, Loren Gabel lit the lamp, tying the game at 1. Final Score: Clarkson 4, St. Lawrence 1.

In girls' high school hockey action Saturday afternoon from Alexandria Bay, the Lady Islanders hosted Saranac-Lake Placid. In the 1st period, Saranac-Lake Placid threatened, but Lady Islanders goalie, Jenna Christopher came up with the stop. Saranac-Lake Placid kept the pressure on, but Christopher once again came up with the stop. The Lady Islanders got on the board first, Elly Gamble snuck one past Brooke Paries: 1-0 Lady Islanders after the 1st period but Lake Placid would score 4 unanswered goals and beat the Lady Islanders 4-1.

In boys' high school basketball, Canton met Westhill in the Peppino's Invitational at O.C.C., a reamatch of last years state class B title game. Sean Dadey hit the 3 for Westhill. Canton running Declan Porter strong to the tin for the slam: Westhill up 10. Then it was Andy Downs with the nice spin move and kiss off glass. Westhill went on to beat Canton 58-49.

In men's college hoops, St. Lawrence was on the road meeting R.P.I. Riley Nac-Lerio led the Saints in double figures with 14 points, but St. Lawrence would fall to R.P.I. 76 to 57. Brandon Arnold and Ben Crawford each scored 12 points in the loss for the Saints, St. Lawrence now 1-5 on the year.

The St. Lawrence Women were also on the road taking on R.P.I. Katie Frederick, the only Lady Saint in double figures Saturday, scored 11, but it wasn't enough as St. Lawrence fell to R.P.I. 49 to 46. The loss drops the Lady Saints' record to 2-3 on the season.
