Former Detective Pleads Guilty To Sexually Exploiting A ChildPosted: Updated:
A former Ogdensburg city police detective pleaded guilty in federal court Tuesday to sexually exploiting a child.
Harry McCarthy, age 57, admitted that in 2013 and 2014, he used a child to engage in sexually explicit conduct to make child pornography.
At the time of his crime, McCarthy was an officer in the Ogdensburg Police Department.
He faces 15 years in prison when he's sentenced April 18.
The sentenced would be followed by a lifetime term of supervised release. McCarthy would also be required to register as a sex offender.
McCarthy was indicted by a federal grand jury in 2016 on charges of sexually exploiting a child for the purpose of creating child pornography and for distributing, receiving, possessing and transporting child pornography.
He also faces state felony charges of possessing and promoting a sexual performance of a child after he allegedly uploaded a picture to his personal e-mail account of a young girl having sex with an adult male.
The indictment accused McCarthy of inducing a 13 year old to engage in "sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of creating images" in 2013 and 2014.
He was arrested in August 2015 and collected $56,000 in pay from the city while on suspension. That ended when he retired at the end of June.
He was a 30-year veteran of the Ogdensburg Police Department.
