The Golden Globe Awards are the first awards of the season and they air on Sunday, January 7 on NBC.
Although the film categories often foreshadow the Oscars, the television categories rarely mimic the EMMYS, as the Hollywood Foreign Press, (the Golden Globe voters) often honor rookie shows-new shows in their first season. On the other hand, the Emmy voters love to vote for the same shows and actors year after year after year.
Another unique GG feature is the division of film categories between Musical/Comedy Feature Film and Drama Film. In the past the Globe voters have been criticized for being a bit liberal for categorizing these films. For example “The Martian” starring Matt Damon was nominated in the “comedy category?” Movies with a popular soundtrack, or where music played a huge part have been categorized as musicals, when they aren’t at all. For example “Saturday Night Fever.” The upside of this is that comedic performances that aren’t often recognized by the super serious self-important Academy get a trophy from the Golden Globes.
The Shape of Water leads in the film categories with seven nominations, close at its heels is The Post and Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri with six nominations each.
In the television comedy category, one of the biggest surprises was the love for the Will and Grace Revival on NBC. Will and Grace was a perennial GG favorite during its original eight year run, but I think everyone can agree that the reboot, although still featuring great performances from the talented foursome- lacks something…. (I am still a huge fan).
