The north country trooper who lost his life while on duty back in July is named 2017 Troop D Trooper of the Year.
Joel Davis posthumously received the honor Friday at a ceremony in Canastota. His family was there to accept the award.
Davis, was the first to arrive on scene of a deadly domestic incident near Theresa, where he was shot and killed.
A woman Nichole Walters was also killed that night, and another person was shot and wounded.
New York State Police said in a Facebook post "Because of Trooper Davis' heroic actions, a female and two small children survived the incident."

Also receiving an award from State Police... Senior Investigator Michael Pastuf was named 2017 troop D BCI Supervisor of the Year. Pastuf is based in the Watertown area office.
