Fire Quelled At Carthage Specialty PaperboardPosted: Updated:
Five people were treated for smoke inhalation following a fire at Carthage Specialty Paperboard in West Carthage Thursday morning.
Firefighters arrived shortly before 8 a.m. Officials say it started on the dryer end of a paper machine.
The five treated were workers who were nearby when the fire began.
"Employees at the mill were attempting with a fire brigade to extinguish the fire," said West Carthage Fire Chief Peter Crump. "We had to set up for operations and water flow to help them extinguish the fire."
"We had five personnel from the mill that received smoke inhalation," Crump said. "They were checked out by the on-scene ambulance. One was transported for evaluation. Other than that, everything went well."
There was some damage to the building, but the bulk of the damage was to the machine.
West Carthage, Rutland, and Black River were among the fire departments that responded.
Firefighters say it took about an hour to get the flames under control.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The building is shut down for maintenance this week and firefighters believe that could be a factor.
"There were employees in the building performing multiple tasks, so that's one of things we're looking at. What they were doing at the time the fire started," Crump said.
We reached out to the company for comment Thursday. If we hear back, we'll update this story.
