As many people struggle to stay warm in these rigid temperatures, a fire believed to have started in a wood furnace levels a home in Madrid.
Seven people — including four children — escaped the Sunday afternoon fire at 19 Depot Street,
The fire was already roaring when Madrid firefighters arrived. Three fire departments were called to help.
It's believed the fire started in a wood-burning furnace.
Firefighters not only had to fight the fire, but also frigid temperatures.
“We had fittings freezing up and some pumps freezing up,” Madrid Fire Chief Wyatt Boswell said. “It was a tough, tough fire to fight.”
The family had taken refuge at a neighbor's house before firefighters arrived.
The North Country Chapter of the American Red Cross gave assistance.
