At least it does for the guys competing in the North Country Goes Green Irish Festival's annual Donegal Beard Contest.
For the past eight years, anyone competing in the contest gets a clean shave on New Year's Day.
They have until the Watertown Irish Festival in March to grow out their chinstrap Donegal beards. One competitor says there is a key factor to having a great beard.
"I think leaving it alone,” said Father Stephen Turner, who’s competing for the second time. “I think that's why I didn't do as good last year as I'm hoping to do this year because I kept fussing with it."
The best Donegal beard will be chosen on March 16.
