Gouverneur – Alice Elaine (Babcock) Coates, 91, passed away on Monday, January 1, 2018 at Riverledge Healthcare in Ogdensburg.
Alice was born in Gouverneur on January 5, 1926, the daughter of Leon and Elma Porter Babcock.
She graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1944.
On May 2, 1946, Alice married Richard E. “Dick” Coates at the Gouverneur United Methodist Church parsonage with Rev. Thomas officiating.
Mr. Coates passed away on August 16, 2008.
Alice and Dick owned and operated a dairy farm on the Scotch Settlement Road for over 40 years, and following retirement, they moved to Pine Grove Apartments in 2005. Alice also worked as a nurse’s aide at Van Duzee Hospital for several years.
She enjoyed gardening, reading, playing cards and bingo, and had snowmobiled with her husband years ago. Alice was a member of the Gouverneur United Methodist Church, the Gouverneur Garden Club, and E.J. Noble Hospital Ladies Auxiliary.
Alice is survived by her 2 sons Thomas and Marilyn Coates of California, Herbert and Debbie Coates of Gouverneur, her daughter Julie and Steve Quattrone of California, a grandson Chad Coates and his fiancé Nicole Woodrow, nieces Laraine Gillette and Marlene Winters, a step granddaughter Whitney Turner and her three children. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband, a sister Elizabeth “Betty” Gillette, and a niece Patsy McIntyre.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 6th at 11:00 am at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur with David Hart, pastor of the First Congregational Church, Ogdensburg officiating and burial in Riverside Cemetery, Gouverneur. Calling hours are Friday evening 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
