Saturday Sports: "Orange Out" Against CancerPosted: Updated:
Some hearty souls braved the elements for a good cause Saturday in Cape Vincent as the Thousand Islands boys' and girls' basketball teams hosted General Brown in the 2 schools annual Coaches Versus Cancer "Orange Out" games.
The first contest of the afternoon pitted the Thousand Islands girls against General Brown in a Frontier League contest. Thousand Islands beat General Brown 70-39.
In the late contest in Cape Vincent, the Thousand Islands boys hosted General Brown on the hardwood. General Brown won 60-41.
In both the girls and boys games, the Thousand Islands Vikings presented a commemorative jersey to the parents of Henry Wood, who would have been a senior this year but passed away in 5th grade after a battle with leukemia. Wood was a student of the Thousand Islands Boys' Basketball coach, Scott Lalonde, and a classmate of many of the current Viking boys and girls basketball players when he passed away.
Former Malone basketball star, Missy West, returned to the North Country to speak as a member of the Positive Coaching Alliance.
West, who was named "Miss New York State" in basketball and went on to play collegiately at Duke, has transitioned from her role as successful college coach to a motivational speaker. She is a member of the New York State High School Hall of Fame, the National High School Athletic Hall of Fame and the North Country Sports Hall of Fame and is bringing a powerful message to coaches, players and parents.
West played professionally in Germany after her college career and went on to a successful college coaching career that saw her win 3 Conference Coach of the Year honors and earned a nomination for National Coach of the Year.
