Cleveland M. Calhoun, age 83, of Watertown, NY, passed away on January 7, 2018, at home.
Cleveland was born in Astle, New Brunswick, Canada on March 13, 1934 to Walter and Maggie Calhoun.
He was married to Margot L. Duffy September 1, 1956, in Saint John, New Brunswick.
He began work in Saint John New Brunswick for Irving Oil as a heavy equipment operator. He moved to the U.S. in the 1950’s working at the Norfolk Paper Mill. He moved to Gouverneur and was President of Rouse Equipment. He was Owner/President of Resco Equipment, a GMC and Diamond Reo truck dealer and heavy equipment company in Watertown. He was also President of Riverside Iron Works in Gouverneur, and President of Star Steel in Massachusetts. He later owned a heavy equipment and demolition company in Virginia. He has spent the latter years in retirement, pursuing his hobbies of hunting and fishing. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and great granddaughter.
He spent spring and summers enjoying Atlantic salmon fly fishing on the Mirimichi River in McNamee, Canada. He was an accomplished pilot with thousands of hours logged. He loved to garden and cook for his family, and was known for his blueberry and apple pies, and his strawberry rhubarb and peach preserves. He was a founding member and owner of Berggrens Club in Croghan, NY. He also enjoyed his many summers boating on the St. Lawrence River.
He was President of the Sacred Heart Foundation from 1973 to 1977 and was a member of the board from 1972 to 1984. He started the first Annual Sacred Heart Foundation Dinner during his tenure as President and was inducted into the Honorary Council at the Fall Foundation dinner this past September.
Our father was a loving father, friend, loyal, with great common sense, and strong opinions. His values and work ethic stemmed from growing up in a country atmosphere of farming and logging.
Our father is survived by his children Elizabeth and Randy Fipps, Cleveland Calhoun, and Shawn and Catherine Calhoun, grandchildren Ryan and Cody Calhoun, Molly Calhoun, Maximillian Calhoun, Reagen Shean, Margot (Maggie) Fipps and great granddaughter Kailin Calhoun, his sister Leona and her husband Jean Furlot, and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Cleveland is preceded in death by his son Robert David Calhoun, his wife Margot L. Calhoun, his longtime companion Nancy Brimmer, his 10 siblings, Elizabeth, Greta, Ivan, Elbridge, Mary Pauline, Bertha, William, Delbert, Daisy, and Eugene and his parents.
A funeral mass will be held in Watertown at 11 AM Saturday, January 13 at Saint Patrick’s Church with the Rev. Pierre Aubin officiating. Visitation will be held at Cleveland Funeral Home, Friday, January 12, 4 to 7PM. Burial will be in the Spring at Glenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to The Sacred Heart Foundation, 668 Thompson St., Watertown, NY.
