Elwood N. “Duke” Snider, 81 of Dexter, passed away January 11, 2018 at Summit Village, Watertown where he had been a patient since December 28, 2017.
Duke was born February 9, 1936 in Oswegatchie, NY the son of George and Nettie Stevens Snider. He graduated from Clifton-Fine High School.
Duke worked at J & L. Mines in Star Lake, worked on the Seaway driving truck, was a New York State Trooper until he retired. Duke was a car salesman at Quick Motors and then worked security at NYS Supreme Court in Watertown.
He married Sally A. Clark on April 21, 1957 at St. Elizabeth Seton Church in Dexter. The couple lived in Dexter all their married lives.
Duke was a member of Lil Angels Snowmobile Club, Watertown Elks. He played softball for over 31 years and umpired softball for many years.
He is survived by his wife Sally, a daughter Julie (Randy) Dumas of Calcium and a son Kevin (Diane) Snider of Rensselaer, NY. Grandchildren include: Christopher Snider of Dexter, Chelsea (James) Hanks of Kentucky, and Caitlin Snider of Rennselaer, NY and Patrick Snider of Rennselaer, NY. He also has five great grandchildren and two brothers: Robert Snider of Nashville, TN and Richard Snider of Munnsville, NY.
He was predeceased by a brother George and a sister Grace VanVoorhis.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday evening at 7:00 PM at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter. Burial will be in the spring at Dexter Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 3:00 – 7:00 PM. Donations may be made to ones’ choice. Online condolences may be made at dexterfuneralhome.com.
