Saturday Sports: Girls' Frontier League Basketball Championships

Posted: Updated:

A busy day on the hardwood at Jefferson Community College, Saturday, as the Girls' Frontier League Basketball Championships were on the line in the A, B, C, and D Divisions.

First up, the Girls' C Division Championship as the top seed Thousand Islands Lady Vikings met 2nd seed Beaver River. Beaver River would get to within 3 points in the 4th period, but Thousand Islands pulled away. Courtney Evans Eppolito's basket makes it a 7 point game. The Lady Vikings went on to win 48-38 to claim the C Division title.

"Every time we play them its' been a tough game. They've gotten alot better since the beginning of the season. Hats off to them. It was a great battle, we knew coming in we better be ready for "em," said Thousand Islands coach, Pete Pettit.

Next up, the Girls' Frontier League A Division Championship: top seed Indian River battling 3rd seed Immaculate Heart Central. It was Paige Leonard finishing with a team high 30 as Indian River beat I.H.C. 50-26 to take home the A Division title.

Jim Whitley, Indian River coach, said, "It was definitely a team effort, defensively I thought we played great. We only gave up 15 in the first half and when our defense is at our best that's when our offense is at our best."

The next game saw top seed Sackets Harbor meet Copenhagen in the Girls D Division title. Sackets Harbor wenton to beat Copenhagen 53-39.

"Well it was a great win for us, we really played our game. We pushed the ball, we got down the floor, we played good 2-3 zone, we were active in it,we challenged shots. So, W was definitely happy with the way we played," said Ryan Tastor, coach of Sackets Harbor.

The final game of the day, the B Division Championship, South Jefferson met Lowville. South Jeff went on to beat Lowville, 50-21.

"You know, every year you set goals as a team and obviously, this was one of ours. It's a stepping stone to what we'd like to do, so accomplishing that, that means something to us," said South Jeff coach, Michelle Whitley.

After each championship game at the McVean Athletic Center, the Jeff Lewis Girls' Basketball officials handed out scholarships to one player in each division. The scholarships,in their 14th year and sponsored by fFX Caprara, are given out to a player that excels in and out of the classroom along with on the basketball court.
