Great Video: Cardboard Sleds at Winterfest in Carthage

Posted: Updated:

Kids took sledding to the next level at Winterfest Saturday. The annual event held in Carthage Park has a signature cardboard sled race. And this year kids made some pretty interesting sleds that included cars, SpongeBob SquarePants and even a pirate ship.

"I just kind of drew it on a piece of paper and then it just came to life after that," said Ryan Gates, pirate ship sled creator.

The crowd cheered as the sleds careened down the hill. Some tumbled to a halt, others simply got stuck and were given a second chance, but it was all in fun. After the race, the winners took home some awards, among them were this sled, called the "BFF," which won first place for the Pee Wee race.

Inside at Winterfest, 4-year old Mareesa Rowsam got her face painted as a blue princess because,

"I thought it was pretty."

Others preferred Bat Girl and were happy with the results, while this girl spun the raffle wheel and  got ready for a scavenger hunt. All the while, a pensive group gripped their crayons during an intense game of bingo.

And even with all these things going on at Winterfest, some took it upon themselves to have a snowball fight.
