Michael J. Whalen, 73, of Waddington

Waddington - Michael J. Whalen, passed away early Monday February 19, 2018, after a long courageous battle with lung cancer, at the Syracuse VA Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.

Michael was born to the late Everett and Natalie (Cunningham) Whalen on January 30, 1945. After graduating high school, he was drafted into the United States Army and served proudly for his country during the Vietnam Conflict from 1963 until his honorable discharge in 1965.

He married Mary Snider in 1966 which ended in divorce later in years, however gifting them with two daughters, Lisa and Joelle.

Michael’s was currently residing with his companion, Candace Riggs for the past several years.

Michael worked at ALCOA for over 32 years retiring in 1998 as a Supervisor and belonged to the ALCOA 25-Year Club, AmVets Post #4, and the American Legion Post #420 Waddington, NY.

Michael, enjoyed spending time outside on his boat in the St. Lawrence River, traveling to Florida and was always ready for a pot full of lobsters! But most importantly spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Michael is survived by his loving children Lisa and husband Jason Swett of Rutland, VT, Joelle and husband Vincent Ciccia of Rockaway, NJ. Also surviving Michael are his four grandchildren, Gavin Ciccia-20, Garret Ciccia-17, Taylor Swett-9, and Addison Swett-4 Along with two brothers Timothy Whalen of Parishville and Peter and wife Jean Whalen of Louisville, NY along with several nieces and nephews.

As per Michaels wishes there will be no public calling hours or services. A celebration of life will held at March 31, 2018 at the Waddington American Legion Post #420.

Memorial contribution in Michael’s name may be shared with Disabled American Veterans; 101 W Hatfield St Massena, New York 13662 and the Richard E. Winter Cancer Center; 5 Lyon Pl, Ogdensburg, NY 13669.
