Massena's Department of Public Works crews got quite the surprise while picking up trash last week - they found stolen rifles and a shotgun.
The guns were found last Tuesday a garbage can and sleeping bag in the area of Roosevelt Street and Liberty Avenue.
The discovery led to the arrest of two people: 29 year old John Maxwell and 27 year old Donna Doman, both of Massena.
According to village police, the guns and other items were reported stolen from a home on Stoughton Avenue last Tuesday.
Village police said the stolen guns included an AR-15, a Remington .30-06, a Remington 870 12-gauge shotgun, a lever action .22, a .35 Remington lever action, and a Ruger 10/.22.
Also taken were a wooden box containing the alleged victim’s father’s ashes, $150 worth of knives and a flat screen TV, according to police.
Maxwell was charged with third-degree grand larceny, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and second-degree burglary. He's being held without bail in the St. Lawrence County Jail.
Doman was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny. She was released and ordered to appear in court at a later date.
