CARTHAGE – Mary J. Savage, 89, of 36749 State Route 3, died on March 7, 2018, at home, surrounded by her loving family.
Mary was born on February 21, 1929 in Hammond, New York, a daughter of the late Walter and Margaret (Dake) Plantz. Mary grew up in Oak Point on the St. Lawrence River. Her family roots go deep in Oak Point, as far back as her grandfather, who was born there in 1851. Her mother was born in the Dake family home in 1894. Mary was born and grew up on River Road in Oak Point. She loved swimming and boating on the beautiful St. Lawrence River. She was a 1947 High School graduate.
On June 25, 1947 she married William P. Savage. They moved just down River Road to the Savage family farm. There she worked on the farm with her husband. As they started to have a family, Mary became a housewife. Mary and Bill built a cottage on the River in the 1950’s. In 1974, they sold the family farm but kept the river portion, placing a mobile home on the remaining property.
She and her husband were employed by Watertown Daily Times delivering papers. They also delivered mail from Chippewa Bay in Hammond, NY. They had a small rubbish removal service around Oak Point and Chippewa Bay. Mary’s husband, Bill, passed in 1994. In 2011, she moved in with her loving daughter, Margaret and her husband Cliff, who took care of her until her death.
Mary’s biggest devotion to life was making sure her family loved one another and never held any regrets. Throughout Mary’s life, she loved to play cards and attend card parties with her family and friends. She was an avid crocheter, making beautiful afgans for family members. She loved to read. She also loved playing Bingo, watching game shows, going to casinos and playing scratch-off lottery tickets. All with the hope of winning the “Big One”. But she accepted any winnings she got.
She is survived by five children, Margaret (Clifford) Scougal of Carthage; Warren Earl (Nancy) Savage of Bergen, NY; William Edward (Debbie) Savage of Canton, NY; Judy M. Hamm of Watertown; Michael C. (Cynthia) Savage of Elma & Hammond, NY; a brother, William Plantz of Hammond, NY; a sister, Viola Heck of Hammond, NY; twelve grandchildren, Jennie; Mark; Brenda; Cathy; Audrey; Michele; Christopher; Aaron; Shelby; John; Jessica; Mary; as well as several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
