JCC Heads To Southern Diamonds Next WeekPosted: Updated:
The sounds of cracking bats are ringing through the air indoors at the McVean Athletic Center at Jefferson Community College as the baseball team busily prepares for the 2018 season.
They've been at it since early January, but early next week, they'll head south for some outdoor play.
The Cannoneers travel to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for first taste of action on the field.
"It's nine games in five days -- we'll play a doubleheader Tuesday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday with a single game Saturday before we go home," Coach John Northrop said/
"We'll play teams from Massachusetts, Illinois, Missouri and we open up with the third-ranked team in NJCAA in Division 3 from Pennsylvania," he said.
The Cannoneers are looking forward to getting outdoors next week after spending the first five weeks of the season indoors working on fundamentals.
"For the most part it's just seeing the ball out of the pitchers hand, and also getting pitchers at bats," he said.
"Along with that we've put in a lot of new plays and new position plays, we'll drill that once a week, but normally it's the fundamental stuff that once we get playing we can't spend a lot of time on 'cause we'll play four doubleheaders a week and we really won't have a lot of time to do the fundamental stuff, so we're really hitting it hard right now."
This year's version of the Cannoneers is a young team, but Northrop is encouraged by their work effort and is hoping for big things this season.
"We're young, we're talented, pitching staff is pretty deep and we do have some talented freshman in position spots, so the guys are very respectful, always on time and compete every day, so it's going be fun to see what these guys bring to the table and how they play the game." he said.
The Cannoneers open the home portion of their regular season April 12 at the Watertown Fairgrounds. They'll host Fulton-Montgomery Community College in a doubleheader.
