Saturday Sports: Playoffs on the Hardwood and on the Ice

The defending national champion, Clarkson Lady Golden Knights opened NCAA tournament play Saturday at Cheel Arena in Potsdam as they hosted Mercyhurst with a trip to the frozen four on the line.

Mercyhurst up 1-0, 5 minutes into the 3rd when Mickayla Petzlova dented the back of the net, tying the game at 1. Tied at 1 in overtime, freshman Elizabeth Gigure had some nifty moves for the game winner, giving the defending national champs a 2-1 overtime win.

In the Men's ECAC Quarterfinals, we have Clarkson needing a win to stay alive as they hosted Colgate Saturday in game 2. In the 1st period, Harolds Eagle rips yarn, putting Clarkson on top 1-0. In the 3rd period, Devin Brousseau found the mark, increasing the Golden Knights lead to 2-0.

At the Harbor Center in Buffalo, Massena hockey met Victor in the Boys' Division 1 State Semi-Final Saturday morning.

In the 1st period, Massena struck first, Logan Chilton dented the back of the net, putting the Red Raiders on top 1-0. Massena added to its lead as Nick Linstad lit the lamp: Red Raiders up 2-0 after the first period. But it would be all Victor after that as Victor scored 4 unanswered goals to beat Massena 4-2.

In the Boys' State Class D Basketball Quarterfinal, Harrisville defeated McGraw 66-55. Peyton Schmitt led the Pirates with 18 points, Trenton Sullivan added 16 points and Ryan Weaver netted 13 points. Harrisville earned a spot in the Final Four next weekend at Binghamton.

In the Girls' State Class D Basketball Quarterfinal, Edwards-Knox defeated Waterville 58-42. Carly Frary led the Lady Cougars with 20 points. Koryn Rowe added 15 points, and Edwards-Knox earned a spot in the Final Four next weekend at Troy.

In the Boys' State Class B Quarterfinals from Hudson Valley Community College, Canton met Mekeel Academy for a return trip to the state final 4. Deonte Holder buried the 3 pointer for Mekeel. Andy Downs answered for Canton with a 3 ball of his own. But Mekeel proved to be too much as Carter Stewart hit for 3 of his 16 as Mekeel beat Canton 53-47.

In Boys' State Class C Quarterfinals from SUNY Canton, St. Lawrence Central hosted Lake George with a final 4 trip on the line. Toby Reome buried the 3 for the Larries. Then it was Cash Feeley down low for the hoop. Mason Flatley answered with the dunk and Colby Perkins hit the trey, but Lake George beat St. Lawrence Central 62-42.

In Girls' State Class C Quarterfinal play from SUNY Canton, Madrid Waddington battled Cambridge. Sophie Phillips hit the 3 for Cambridge. Danielle Hough answered with the trey. It was Morgan Burns to Cameron Chester for the basket, Chester connected but Madrid Waddington fell to Cambridge 60-36.

In Federal Hockey League action from the Watertown Fairgrounds Saturday evening, the Wolves hosted North Shore in game 2 of their weekend series at the fairgrounds. In the 1st period the Wolves got on the board, Tyler Jurich got loose in front and connected, the Wolves on top 1-0. The Wolves go on to beat North Shore 8-2.
