Mountain Warriors Take to the Ice for Sled HockeyPosted: Updated:
Facing off in Canton. A vets team from Fort Drum took on all comers in sled hockey over the weekend.
It's fast and furious. The vets and one active duty soldier on the Fort Drum Mountain Warriors don't let disabilities hold them back.
All the teams that played had vets. This is the sixth year they've come to SUNY Canton. It's high quality sled hockey with two Paralympians in the mix. But it's about more than just winning or being the best.
“They were part of a unit once when they were in the army. So now they're part of a team. They feel that unit again. So they've got the camaraderie,” said Mark McKenna, head coach of the Fort Drum Mountain Warriors: “In hockey you can check and get your frustrations out and then you shake hands afterwards and go out and have a beer and a meal with the guys. I mean, it's a great sport.”
The Veterans of Foreign Wars are big backer. So are local businesses and SUNY Canton. The sled hockey action tourney continues at Roos House Saturday and Sunday.
